Ideas to help job searchers get better, quicker results and find jobs they love.

Hi, I’m Gerard le Roux – full time CV writer and job search coach. I’m quoted in The Star, Financial Mail, Cape Argus, Cape Times, Pretoria News and Natal Mercury and on radio on job hunting and career matters.

A competitive job market means you have to market yourself more powerfully. And that’s a tough challenge. It demands so much from you, from having the right mental attitude to having a very firm grasp on basic business principles and being able to apply them effectively to your job search.

Do you have time for that? And where do you find the best guidance? You know, smart guidance – that will help you get your desired results (usually a better job, fast). So right here at The Job Search Clinic, I hope to provide some of the answers you’re looking for – practical ideas and strategies that may help inspire a quick, positive job change or career move.

Here’s a bit about how The Job Search Clinic started.

In 2002 I was working as a recruiter with large corporations as clients. But my real passion was to see my ‘candidates’, the job hunters, do better at marketing themselves out there. Being more proactive. Being smarter. ‘Cause they were making some really bad mistakes – and no-one! was telling them anything. All they were getting back from recruiters were lame things like,

  • “You’re overqualified” or,
  • “Sorry the position was filled internally” (after hearing nothing for 3 weeks after their interview.)

So I started a free weekly e-mail advice column to give them some ‘guerrilla’ style ideas and strategies. I called it “Job Search Success”. It’s been going out free to up to 10 000 job hunters for the last 6 years (sign up here by sending a mail to jobsearchclinic@getresponse.com). And helping job hunters is now my full time occupation in my business The Job Search Clinic.

    • Speaking and Workshops
I speak on career and job search topics, and have been a guest of the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business and the Central University of Technology. I also conduct “Guerrilla” job search workshops for companies that are retrenching. (Make direct contact with me at gerard [at] jobsearching.co.za to inquire.]

Over the years I’ve learned a lot about what works in the job market and what doesn’t. I’ve also learned that getting and keeping a great job is not just about having a great CV, or knowing how to answer tough interview questions.

It’s also about one’s mental attitude, habits, and confidence. It’s about being able to persist through the tough times, sometimes with no-one who understands what you’re going through. These are valuable skills in life. And frequently they are the difference between those who lead rich, interesting lives, and those who struggle.

So being successful in your career and by extension, in life – hey, it’s complicated. And ironically one feels swamped in advice – 400-page books on every topic, everywhere. Sheesh! Who’s got the time? So hopefully you’ll find some concise, helpful ideas and strategies here that will result in big improvements in the way you market yourself and in results you achieve in your job search.

Please note – although restricted to being at one place at a time, the Internet and related technology (like phones!, or e-mail or Skype) mean I can help you no matter where you’re from or where in the world you are. Landlines and office addresses are not my style! One day I’m at a coffee shop or country club with my laptop, another I’m working from home, another I’m in another city for a seminar … you get the picture.
